Question:

Is it true that women shed their hair once a year? If so, how can you tell if it is shedding or actual hair loss?

Answer:

Both men and women lose hair during certain times of the year, which is very similar to the shedding season for animals. It occurs twice a year. During transitions between seasons, it is normal to see more loss of hair than at other times. Generally, we all lose about 25-40 hairs per day. As summer approaches, we lose about 45 hairs per day and as the fall nears, we lose about 60. This is no cause for alarm as the falling hairs are replaced by new hairs that are healthy and vigorous.

Vitamin treatments high in B6 and amino acids can help facilitate the regrowth of new hair. Persons who have a hereditary disposition to baldness or alopecia can lose up to 100 hairs per day during the shedding season. The hair will be replaced by the percentage determined by their hereditary. If one finds that the shedding continues longer than two months or the hair does not replace itself and gets thinner after each season, then this could be an indication that a hair loss condition should be addressed. A hair check test and scalp analysis can help to determine if this is the case.
